Review

I wasn’t too impressed with the first book in this series as I never read a fiction/mystical book before. The storyline was okay, but there was a lot of narration about how everyone picked at scabs, their beards, rubbing their necks, and especially biting their lips. I also didn’t cars for the character of Ulf, as the author made him out to be a spoiled child who didn’t want anything to do with Viking life, raids and battles. He also didn’t like killing which is something I’ve never seen from an author writing a book about Vikings raiding and plundering. It wasn’t believable at all, and no Viking group of battle warriors would have ever put up with this nonsense.I already purchased the three books in this series, so I read the second book which I thought was far better, although Ulf didn’t change, nor did the mundane narrative of the various movements each character made throughout the book, such as rubbing necks, running fingers through their hair, and their various hair and beard styles throughout the day. But, the storyline became more interesting and I enjoyed the book. This, the third book I felt the author did a great job with the storyline. It was very engaging, surprising and very captivating. The way the battles were described were not as good as some of my favorite authors, such as Bernard Cornwell, Peter Gibbons, Conn Iggulden, or Simon Scarrow, but it was a page turner, and a book I couldn’t put down. In fact, I read the entire book in two days, something I hadn’t done in a while. It seems like the author became more inspired with masterful plots he takes you on. You actually feel like you are there with the characters going through the various events with them. The ending of the book was a complete surprise, and actually left me wondering why the author ended this book as he did. Perhaps because anyone that reads this book will be interested to find out what happens to the characters going forward.Unfortunately, or fortunately, I note that the author has taken a break from this series to write a historical fiction series, which are my favorite, so can’t wait to read that series in hopes that it is equal to, or even better than this third book. I enjoy learning about history through fictional narratives.
